I am always fascinated by how a 3rd world country like Malaysia can hold such an annual event so successfully. Their chess festival normally runs for 12 days.

Have a look at the tournaments they are organizing during this 12 days period.

Their team tournament are especially successful with players from China/Philipines/Singapore/Vietnam coming to compete.

Total prize funds and trophies for all these tournaments - I guess in the region of at least US$ 50k.

Can a 1st world country like Canada match Malaysia in holding this type of chess festivals ?

    Some food for thought

    1. For the record, Malaysia doesn't have a Grand Master yet. The highest title player is IM. Canada has quite a number of GMs/IMs

    2. Malaysia is a 3rd world country and Canada 1st world country.

    3. Population of Malaysia is roughly the same as Canada

I am hopeful Canada will perform better than Malaysia in the future.

    Cheers
