Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links

12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Thanks for the compliment! (that I wish I could return...). I like to think that it could be the main reason why I was able to win the Canadian Championship at 51. I am still capable of learning, something that many younger people have apparently lost. :)
By the way, there are no possible comparisons between the Guelph barebone event and the Montreal International. Two events belonging to completely different categories. The point is that the gap should not be so great.

Internet coverage could of course have gone smoother, and media attention could have been greater along with a hosts of smaller details. However one thing is certain. The top GMs who played this year and the years before like the city and the conditions (this includes the money), otherwise they would not come back.
Awwwww.... nothing is perfect. Hey, Hal Bond, did you hear that? Don't sweat all those details that Jean tore your head off for a few weeks ago. He realizes nothing is perfect, and you are not to blame, just as Langlois is not to blame for the TIM shortcomings. All those players in the Closed who posted saying they liked the conditions, they liked the city, Jean realizes now that that's what counts! He was WRONG to blame everything on you! Don't be hard on Jean, he is still learning!
I will add that a lot of the good that has been said about Yves Casaubon can be said about Hugh Brodie. To me they are in the same category of people who give without counting.
At least this gives people the chance to praise Hugh while he is still with us.

Nevertheless ... having had the pleasure of knowing Hugh for over 35 years, I can tell you that he is one of the most decent people I have ever met; in chess or any other sphere. From the lifetime 1200 player to the masters, he treats everyone the same. I have never heard anyone speak badly of him before you began doing so.
He is tireless in supporting and helping those chess causes in which he believes. If he has doubts or criticisms, he has earned the right to voice them.
As an invidual so closely aligned with the Montreal Open, I wonder why you are so aggressive with critics. Is this the face of the event that Ahuntsic CC really wishes to present? As a sponsor, is this a facet of your company you want us to see first?
I have mentioned to you privately that a little thicker skin might be in order. Of course you are free to react as you will, but then you must not be surprised if others claim the same right.

I think you forgot to mention the part where they defend the screwup in Quebec and attack the perfectly good event in Ontario.

Sponsors are generally not looking to "get their money back", but they may be looking for ROI (return on investment) which most of the times takes the form of INTANGIBLES (impossible to put into dollar and cents) in terms of image, credibilitty and visibility. Whether you call it "sponsorship" or "donation" is beside the point. The results are the same: better and bigger tournaments, and more exposure for the game that you obviously hate.
You click the little "+ button next to quote on one post, then go find another one etc etc. when you get to the final one you want to quote, you just click the quote button.
Hugh Brodie is a weird man that give bad opinions on big events and make good comments on picnic chess events and café events.

Hugh Brodie has made a huge contribution to Canadian Chess over many years including his tireless work on the Canadian games database. He won the CFC volunteer of the year in 2008.
For certain, Hugh's opinion carries a lot more weight than yours, no matter how many kids you have!;)

At the FIDE congress, amedments to the chess event regulations might be added, which are scary.

Incredible! Even if F1 in Montreal Grand-Prix was free I would have only 3 days of free pleasure.
