    Bobby Fischer’s Birthday, March 9

    March 9, 2020

    Bobby was born in 1943 and this would have been his 77th birthday.

    Among many memories people have posted today was this note donated to the Max Euwe Centrum by Elliot Hearst. In it Bobby resigned his adjourned game against Donner during the Varna 1962 Olympiad and slid the note under the door of his team leader Elliot Hearst.

    Dear Elliot,

    I resign the game with Donner

    Please don’t wake me

    Bobby.

    Chessgames.com has some interesting comments on the game:

    - Interesting. Playing against the extremely erratic Donner, Fischer tries an unsound sacrifice and gets waster

    - White had a great advantage, one way of realizing it would have been as follows: 23. Bxg7 Bxg7 24. Nxg7 Kxg7 25. Qd4+ 25...e5? loses after 26. Qg4+ Kh8 27. Rd7 Qc8 28. Qf5 Rf8 29. Qf6+ and if Black plays something else then White traps the knight with 26.c5! regaining the piece with a powerful attack.

    - Prior to this game, Bobby had a win and a draw over Donner.

    - With all due respect to Mr Donner, he did not win this game. Fischer lost it.

    - Several chess authors noted that instead of 25.Rd4? Fischer should've played 25.Qg3+ Kh7 26.h5 ensuring that the f8 bishop stays out of play for a while.

    - Edmar J Mednis from <How To Beat Bobby Fischer>:

    The game was adjourned here, to be continued in the morning. A full night of analysis by Bobby and the American team showed that Black always comes first. One possible variation: <45...Rxb3 46.g6 Rb1 47.g7 Rf1+ 48.Kg2 e2! 49.f6 Be3 50.Rxe3+ Kxe3 51.g8=Q e1=Q 52.Qe6+ Kd2!> Bobby therefore asked me to reach Donner in the morning and tell him that Fischer resigns. I was scheduled to be up, anyway, to play off my adjourned game against Kramer (a won endgame). While searching for Donner I ran into Kramer and informed him also that Fischer had resigned. Kramer thought for a while and then decided that he therefore should resign against me! Thus, Bobby's fine example of sportsmanship made my morning easier also.

    +++++++

    There is also some comment on the site as to whether Fischer demanded Donner’s nicer room in the hotel from the management!
