General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Your last statement is not very intelligent because much time has elapsed since the blog first came out. KS would have objected by now, had the material been written by someone else on his site. ( not an easy thing to do with password authentication anyway ).
Anthony, I was not saying what you think I was saying. I wasn't referring to intelligence, but rather, to making moral judgements and to having opinions on current events, politics, etc. Neither a GM title nor a high I.Q. translates to being superior at any of these things, that's my opinion. It is fine for you to agree with Kevin's opinions, you are of course free to do that, but please don't give his GM title as a justification for you and others to agree with him. Surely there must be other reasons why you agree with him?
I guess I was fooled into thinking Charles Graves' post about KS not having internet access was for real, because Graves posed himself as a huge KS fan. But for whatever reason, I guess he was making some sort of nonsense of the whole situation.
The Grandmaster title, and the IM title likewise, adds no credence whatsoever to what the titleholder thinks about world affairs or any other non-chess matter.
As for the issue of Spraggett himself, I thought there was some doubt raised as to whether these blogs are really (or completely) from Spraggett. Perhaps Spraggett is providing the chess-related portions, and someone else is adding the non-chess portions without Kevin's knowledge? Like Peter Stockhausen, perhaps Kevin will "emerge" suddenly, and will disavow any responsibility for the non-chess blogs?
Are you saying then that chess, and the higher levels of playing chess ( GM )have no impact on intelligence? Studies prove otherwise.

I think you are mixing up the fact that on chesstalk a few years ago, people could post nonsense ANONOMOUSLY on this site and get away with it. It was really getting out of hand so the admins had us sign in with our real names. This of course was the proper thing to do and should have been done at the start. There may have been several KS imposters. We dont know. Only those out there know who they are.

But what does it matter? The CFC will be extinct in about 4 -5 years anyway.
That's not likely. They have the FIDE fruit stand in Canada. That alone should do it for them. But it gets better. They have charitible status. They also have the Chess Foundation.
I've misplaced my dictionary-- Can anyone help me with the spelling of "sycophant"?
I cannot help with the spelling, Ken. However the meaning is something like: the relationship of a CFC vice president to the CFC President during a one year term.
The CFC has had MANY sycophants. One after another, they never seem to disagree with their masters. And they seek their own gain.

Personally I love Kevin's blog. It is such good reading. He is undoubtedly one of our greatest fiction writer but he seems unaware of it. Of course problems arise when he uses real names, a few selected facts, lots of interpretations and wild guesses, to call fiction the "truth".
Hi Jean,
I read the following quote from Simon Mawer in an interview with Sarah Crown, which appeared in "The Guardian" (a British newspaper) on Saturday, October 3, 2009:
"I'm a novelist. I don't want to tell the truth. I want to manipulate things as I choose. I want to lie."
You know, if you guys out west had addressed this situation in a more professional manner then you wouldn't have faced anywhere near as much grief as you did.
The term "professional" implies that someone is getting paid and therefore has contractual obligations. Nothing of the kind is going on here. And I'm not aware of experiencing any "grief."
If chessplayers had the collective ability to influence the thinking of others in areas unrelated to chess, then I suspect you'd be one of the first to know about it.
I may not agree with all the decisions with closing down threads, but they are always still there... and from what I can tell this is a private server... the people who own it pay the bills and get to choose the rules. On the other hand, KS's own blog has the most extreme form of censorship... he doesn't allow anyone to defend themselves!
If you look at other high profile blogs like GM Susan Polgars (an excellent source for chess related material), she allows comments... even after all the crap the USCF has done/is doing to her. She doesn't seem scared to allow comments on her site and she is FAR more of a public figure than KS is... I guess she has nothing to hide... goes to show that even she has more balls than KS... (no offense to S.Polgar intended!)
The comments are funny too, like the one complaining about stuff here on Chesstalk getting deleted. We've deleted nothing and only closed one of the several threads on the subject.
“If you let a bully come in your front yard, he'll be on your porch the next day and the day after that he'll rape your wife in your own bed.'' Lyndon Johnson
well looks like I made his list... but with the logic of the above quote it is no wonder....
Just a little further down in KS's weekly report on Chess in Canada, he shows some correspondence from some of his readers... These quotes show that he has influence to a wide audience and feels free to continue his campaign of character assassination against people who don't agree with him... all this and his cowardice in not allowing others to respond on his site by taking comments off. The sad part is that these people don't understand the complete BS that this guy is shoveling from across the world...
There are also two nice photographs, including a giant one of Kevin standing near a fireplace, and this testimony written by Kevin's brother, Jim Spraggett:
"
This site posts a link to KS's blogspot so his family considers the blogspot to be written by KS himself
