  • First Ontario HS Championship: Kingston 1965

Two sources, both of whom were involved with the event, informed me that the first-ever Ontario HS Chess Championship was hosted in Kingston in 1965.

In 1980, Kalev Pugi, former CFC President and longtime Kingston player, organizer and builder, told me at the Kingston Chess Club that he had organized, in 1965, at Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute (KCVI), a championship for Ontario High School players. And in 2006, on our shared car trip returning to eastern Ontario, from the 2006 Canadian Open in Kitchener, incoming CFC Vice-President (later President) Dr. William Doubleday, a member of the KCVI class of 1965, told me that he had won this tournament.

I felt it was important to post this information. I continue to seek further facts about this event, and hope others may know important elements about it, and post that information here. This may have been the first one, but there may have been others, held earlier.

The current run of Ontario HS Championships dates consecutively from 1968, I believe (possibly excepting COVID cancellation years).

    Respectfully submitted,
    Frank Dixon
