    The CCC Post ( Week of July 1 - 7/11 ).

Q: Chess clubs provide a fun place for members, where they play casual and tournament chess, kibitz, and meet with their friends. So does it really matter how the club is governed to do this – autocratic or collegially?

A: CCC says it does matter. Club members have to see they not just receiving a “ service “ they paid for, like at a restaurant. Most ( all ? ) clubs are non-profit – the executive are volunteers, and there is no paid club manager. The executive should not be seen as “ club slaves “, to deal with everything. The members are all part “ owners “ of the club, and should do more than just pay a membership. Nor should a President be elected as a “ dictator “ for a year, who decides everything. Executive should be collegial. This would emphasize the nature of the club as a whole as “ collegial “.
