Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links

12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.

14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.

I think Harper should spend less time running around the world and more time looking after domestic issues. I doubt he realizes the mail delivery which is being discontinued is important to a lot of seniors and people who can't get around much.
While we're on about political leaders, I notice Horvath talks about working people but not so much about seniors and the disabled. Did you notice?
If Trudeau promises to undo the mail delivery decision of the Cons then I'll vote for him. I'd prefer the Cons but that mail delivery is important.
I agree anything can happen but I don't think the NDP winning the federal election is one of those things.
The NDP's own numbers seem to be decent indicator of what they can expect and I don't know what they are seeing. If Chow runs against Ford it will be an indicator the NDP aren't likely to win the government.

Well Gary, I'm not yet getting my $ 20 ready for a move....in politics, 2015 is a very, very long way off. Anything can yet happen, especially if Trudeau makes a bad misstep, and people are tired of the Harper corruption and being in bed with everyone despicable.

Bob, How did you like the results of last nights "buy" elections? It didn't work.
It didn't surprise me much.
Probably you know I want to vote for the conservatives. Unfortunately, and probably to your surprise, I can't support the right to work legislation the provincial Cons are proposing. For me it's a deal breaker. I really hope the NDP puts a candidate in this riding whom I can support.
Federally, I'm hoping the Cons drop their plans to stop home mail delivery. It's not that great for seniors who don't get out much. If Trudeau promises to continue mail delivery he will get my vote. I'll reluctantly vote for him.
The federal NDP are now campaigning to become the NEXT FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF CANADA!

If they have realistic chances why would Chow be considering contesting the Toronto Mayor election. A high profile federal cabinet post has to be better.
Looking at the Toronto mayor election, Ford should get his 30 to 35 % Ford nation vote plus whatever he picked up during the ice storm. Toronto was lucky to have him and his laid back daily news conferences. Tory, if he runs could get around 20%. Stintz, if she runs, along with Minnon Wong and Soknacki should total around 15 to 20 % of the vote combined. That leaves Chow with about the same as Ford and a tight race.
If Ford can keep up his attacks on the provincial government and the shabby treatment of Toronto it will likely be in his favour and pick up votes. Particularly if the provincial government leaves Toronto to pick up the storm damage mainly on their own.
I know you don't believe in polls, Gary, but they do often have currency. I knew you'd want to know about this one - will stir your commitment to get that $ 20 saved up in advance!!
I wouldn't get too excited. There are still a couple of years till the next election and new riding boundaries. Quebec will have a smaller proportion of influence than they do now with more new ridings in other provinces.
Lots of job losses in Ontario last month so I'd expect people to vote for whatever is best for their jobs.

None of that stuff was really presented as proper evidence, subject to challenge, at the time. The Kellock–Taschereau Commission was a bit of a travesty, with witnesses being browbeat into confessions of one kind or another. Think: Diplock Courts.
Anyway, that's neither here nor there. The kind of spying that Snowden et al have revealed is of a gigantic order of magnitude worse than George Orwell imagined. Every e mail, tweet, text, post on a Discussion Board (like this one), etc., is being stored and saved, including confidential personal data (the Canadian lady who was banned from the USA for once having been depressed is a case in point) without any proper oversight whatsoever. These are police state tactics. They undermine and destroy democracy. The "5 Eyes" (USA, UK, Australia, NZ and Canada), given the evidence, make the former Stazi of East Germany seen like amateurs in comparison.
Furthermore, spying for private corporate benefit (Brazil, eg, or providing "intelligence" at taxpayer expense on environmental organizations and activists for the oil and gas industry) is not in the public interest; it's a private interest by definition. Why should my tax dollars subsidize Enbridge black ops?
You, sir, who if only you could would gladly be judge, jury and executioner of one Borislav Ivanov, are in no position to speak of presenting proper evidence or to rail against police state tactics. You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time.

Nope, that's not what I'm claiming. Try re-reading the litany of violations I've spent some time enumerating for your benefit. These show how things are different now, that the quantity and quality of spying is at unheard of levels, and that it is a real danger to society.
If those ships are still there in a couple of months when their weather starts turning cold, they will likely have their hulls crushed by the ice. That's if it doesn't happen sooner.
I think they will have a harder time funding such junkets to publicize the dangers of global warming in the future with those ships at the bottom of the ocean. An inconvenient truth indeed.
