  • Saturday Rapid - sign of success?

Recent low turnouts for the regular Saturday Rapid in Toronto is an indication that attractive tournaments are drawing our top players elsewhere. Note the excellent performance of Leonid Gerzhoy in the recent Bahamas International where he performed at a credible GM level.

GM Sambuev also scored in the prize list but Mike Dougherty finished just short of the money.
Meanwhile, there has been no mention on CT of Aman Hambleton's GM level performance in the 2012 Ch Elite POM du Quebec where he won clear first ahead of both Sambuev and Anton Kovalev (defeating the first and drawing the second of the two)

I should mention that Aman has yet to play in the Saturday Rapid so I can only imagine how well he would do if he did :)
So where must we look to replenish the the players who go to some of these prestige events? Juniors, perhaps? - how about poker players???
Yesterday, I got a text message from poker player Dan Smith who wants to join today's tourney. For those not into poker, Dan Smith is the world's No. 1 money winner in poker tournaments this year - so far $5 million since January. Should we up the entry fee as of today? :D
