  • Blitz with increments....

Increments have introduced a new era to blitz chess. :-) I walked into Montreal's Cafe Pi last night to discover player A and player B (names disguised to protect the innocent :-) ) playing blitz - for money, with contra (i.e. like backgammon's doubling cube). I asked "What odds?", and player B said "you'll have to look". (the clock was facing away from me).

Player B (1900 strength) had 3 minutes, but Player A (master strength) had 5 SECONDS. They played with a one-second increment. Amazingly - player A was up about 20 "points". His 5 seconds usually increased to 11 or 12 seconds later in the game, but "A" rarely lost on time.

When I enquired "What stakes? Ones? Twos?" - Player B mumbled "Something like that" which indicated to me that it was fives or tens. (and "B" will pay in full :-) ). Not a fun evening for everyone. :-)

I think these type of odds will only work well on touch-sensitive clock buttons - not on a clock on which you have to physically push buttons, wasting precious fractions of a second.
