  • Ponomariov out....

...looks like he lost the Armageddon game to Daniil Dubov - not exactly a name you hear everyday. For those of you not familiar with Dubov, he's a Russian, who received the GM title at 14 (he's now 17). From Wikipedia:

2006 – 3rd place in the European Youth Chess Championship U10
2008 – 2nd place in the European Youth Chess Championship U12
2009 – 2nd place in the Russian Youth Chess Championship U16
Winner of the Russian Youth Rapid Chess Championship U16
Winner of the Russian Youth Blitz Chess Championship U16
Winner of the Young Stars of the world tournament
Winner of the World Youth U-16 Chess Olympiad
2011 – Winner of the World Youth U16 Chess Olympiad
Winner of the Moscow City Rapid Chess Championship

    Re: Ponomariov out....

Dubov played a Larsen Attack with 1. b3. They played the first half dozen moves at Bullet speed. After 25. f4! he got a nice attack along the a1-h8 diagonal and eventually had an unstoppable f-pawn for the win. The Bishop pair just shredded Pono's position. It was an exciting game to watch as it was the only one and, therefore, had the full attention of the commentators Susan Polgar and Lawrence Trent. You could tell they were excited by the game as well.

Lawrence held his own in the analysis of this game although I have to say I get a kick out of how Susan politely shows how he's mistaken about this or that. She's teaching a lot of (male) chess players how to express disagreement and, well, behave. Maybe we could make her a ChessTalk moderator? lol.
