  • San Francisco

Hard to believe this story emanates from San Francisco, long one of my favourite American cities.

This is very disappointing news, but if the facts are as stated, then the City of San Francisco and the SFPD have done the right thing. I hope that the dedicated street chess players of San Francisco find a way past this hurdle.

      Re: San Francisco

With the same problem in Toronto's Gould & Yonge street chess, the police did the smart thing. They decided it was a good way to keep tabs on the drug dealers and playing chess for money is NOT gambling! The San Francisco decision was ill considered.
It was quite a scene to see some 30 or 40 chess games in a row on Market Street in '96 when I was there for the summer.

You have a good deal more faith in the SFPD (or any American PD for that matter) than I, Dan. I'm more in tune with the views of Paul Craig Roberts, an American economist of note and former Assistant Secretary of the Treasurey under Ronald Reagan. You can find his "Why America's Police Are More Dangerous Than Crimianls" views at AlterNet today:

I see the Colbert Report and Floyd Mayweather chimed in on the subject last night:

The chess part starts at 6:10.

Colbert: "I've never liked chess. I'm a traditionalist: if I want to lose to a computer at something I'll just try to update Windows."

The 'game' isn't over just yet. 'SF Weekly' reports we're about to witness "Occupy Chess":
