Looking at the current betting line at Ladbrokes, it appears that the current World Champion, Anand, is going to defend his title next month as the prohibitive underdog. Three months ago, every dollar bet upon Anand to retain his title returned $2.75 (i.e. a $1.75 profit). That has now increased to $3.00 (a $2.00 profit). Conversely, you now have to bet $3 on Carlsen to get $4.00 back (paying $4.20 3 months ago).

Punters are clearly paying much more heed to recent history between the two. While Anand still maintains a lifetime edge in both classical and rapid/blitz encoutners between the two, Carlsen has had the upper hand the last couple of years. Nonetheless, I suspect that at 2 to 1 odds, Anand might just be the 'better' bet.

I doubt the odds mean much. Probably the idea is to get an equal amount of betting on each side and the house gets their money from the juice.

      Re: Ladbrokes

The money continues to flow to Carlsen and the Ladbrokes odds currently sit at:

      Anand 5/2
      Carlsen 2/7

At even money, I'd certainly take Carlsen, but at these posted odds I'd take Anand in a flash. While not quite sitting on the fence as much as GM Negi, whose quote you'll find at the end of the ensuing linked Firstpost article, I don't think Carlsen has much more than a 60% probability of winning the match and 5/2 (2/7) odds are borderline absurd.

Business Insider reports how seriouslly Anand is training for this match so I'm seriously starting to like Anand at Ladbrokes' 5/2 odds.
