  • Aurora CC 6-week swiss on Mondays

Yesterday we started a new CFC-rated event at the club (details, players, results @ http://www.aurorachessclub.ca/?page_id=3030 ). 30 players joined and started battles in one section. As the ratings range is very wide, the accelerated pairings are used. The time control is quite uncommon -70 min + 15 sec inc, something with an increment but not that games end after midnight LOL No big surprises in the first round. Those who were strong won, those who were lucky too, in total 11 players have 1 point including rating-leader Mickey Stein.

Seems we had a lot of fun and one year passed like a blink :) Next Monday will be the club's birthday party before the second round :) Come and celebrate with us. There is always a space (row) for casual players too :)

It is interesting to note that Scarborough CC will likely move also to Game/70 + 15 sec. for our next tournament (executive still to decide). We cannot have games longer than 3 hrs. 10 min. because of our hall permit leaving time. It is the rule that should a game bump up against the permit, it is an automatic draw. We are currently playing Game/60 + 15 sec., and have found the games generally ending early - so we have some wiggle room to make the time control longer.

The weekly Wednesday night tournaments at the Montreal CC are game/75 and 30 seconds increment. Games start at 7, and are usually over by 10:30. However - a recent Q+P vs Q ending degenerated into a 206-move marathon - finishing at 2:15 am!

Re: your "automatic draw" rule - wouldn't that encourage the losing player to stall for time (if he had sufficient time) - just to get the draw? Why not adjourn like in the old days?

        Hi Hugh:

SCC has no other time available to play an adjournment. And many members have no time for chess, except Thursday evenings. So adjournments are a non-starter for us.

I proposed an adjudication committee, using engines. The elite players would not hear of this - no control over their game to anyone else.

Thus the automatic draw - players feel if they've gone that far without either side winning, then they've played pretty equally throughout, and so a draw is fair.
