  • Windsor players win trophies in Michigan

Seventeen Windsor juniors crossed the border to play in the annual Michigan Scholastic Club Championships. There were a total of 431 players from 57 teams playing in 4 divisions. To avoid Windsor-ites playing each other, all the Windsor players were grouped under the "Friday Knights" banner, led by CFC president Vlad Drkulec.

Overall, we won first place in K-5 (15 teams), first place in K-8 (19 teams), and sixth place in K-3 (14 teams). Windsor players won 14 individual trophies, as well as the team trophies.

Actually all of the seventeen kids who attended the tournament under the Windsor Friday Nights/Knights banner have attended the Sobeys Friday night class within the last couple of months and most of them are regulars, have recently been regulars or are my individual students who are about to become regulars. We could have called them the Windsor Purple People Eaters for the way that they consumed their opponents but chose Windsor Friday Nights/Knights because that's what they called themselves the last five years or so. The K-5 group won after four rounds as their closest competitors finished with 15.5 points and they had 16 points after four rounds and nineteen after five where only the top four scores counted.

The results were Michigan Scholastic Chess Team Championship Windsor Friday Knights Sobeys class showing off some of their hardware won Saturday November 9th. Seventeen kids fourteen trophies. Not a bad day. First place team 19/20 in K-5, First place team 17.5/20 in K-8, Sixth place team 13/20 in K-3. Fourth place in K-3 individual Steven with 4/5. Wendy, Alan and Jacob all six years old had 3/5 in the K-3. First place three way individual tie in K-5 (Adam, Rohan and Jeannie) with a perfect 5/5. Fifth place tie in K-5 (Jack, Devin, David) with 4/5. First place tie (Lily) 5/5 in K-8. Fourth place tie Tyler 4.5/5 in K-8. Sixth place tie in K-8 (Zhehai, Karthik, Frank) with 4/5. Tyler D'Amore started 2013 with a CFC rating of 658. He doubled it before slipping back to 1300 but returned to his winning ways with a performance that should net him a first USCF rating in the 1600 range.
