Martha Samadashvili (see news link below) was one of the many Americans who dominated this year's NAYCC held in Toronto. She's apparently now rated 1823 which 'only' places her 3rd in the U.S. for U10 Girls. Given the CFC website lists our top 3 U10 Girls at 1445, 1336, and 1299 respectively (ignoring the fact that the soon-to-be-8-year-old, Harmony Zhu, is rated 1703 but for some bizarre reason doesn't top the U10 list, only the U8 list), there would seem to be a gargantuan rating difference between our top players and the American top players. This rather begs the question, where is Canada going wrong?

Given that Martha's Canadian rating is 1414 (though her performance rating was 1449 - shouldn't the performance rating be the same as the provisional rating for her first and only CFC rated tournament?) maybe the Canadian girls are not doing that badly. Jeannie Zhang, of Windsor, tops the under 10 girls list and did win at CYCC and finish third at NAYCC. When she is on her game, Jeannie has no trouble competing with the strongest U.S. girls in her age group. Allison Tsypin who is also one of the top Canadian girls under 10 years of age also seems to be able to play well above her rating on a fairly consistent basis. I would not read that much into the rating differences. Lily Zhou, also of Windsor, who is ten years old has a USCF rating of 1772.

I am more concerned about the drop off in girls participation in chess as they get older than the ratings that they currently enjoy. We recently saw Erica Forshaw drop out of chess after finishing second in CYCC under 14 girls leaving the Windsor area with Rachel Tao (who also finished 2nd tied with Erica at CYCC) and Tian Hou as the only active 14 year old girls in local chess.

A lot of this difference is just a population effect: if Canada had 10x the population then we'd see higher ratings at the top end of all the youth categories.

Vlad's point about kids quitting is IMHO a more serious concern.

Not necessarily. It would be if she played only established rated players but if she played other unrated players (possibly even provisionally rated players, I'd have to look at the code) there is an initial rating calculated against rated players, then a second stage which everything is recalculated using that initial rating (and including the games against other unrated players who now also have an initial rating assigned.).
