    The BBC business news features Alan Trefler, who pulled off one of the greatest upsets in chess history at the 1975 World Open Chess Championship in New York. The 115 seed, with a 2075 rating, finished in a tie for 1st with GM Pal Benko and ahead of numerous other GMs.

    Today, he would be accused of cheating and asked to strip. A good example of why a good result isn't proof of cheating.

      Naturally it might depend on the quality of the games, e.g. whether many of his moves in most/all the games matched an engine's. If at least some of his higher rated opponents sometimes just blundered...
