  • Vienna Gambit Tournament 2003

In clicking on chessgames.com's player of the day today, Georg Marco, I couldn't help but notice that five of his ten "Notable Games" came from the same tournament, the Vienna Gambit Tournament 1903, where all 10 GMs there had to start their double round robin games 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4. Evidently, the true gambiteers like Tschigorin and Marshall walked all over the positional players (:

It's too bad we don't have more of these theme opening tournaments in this day and age. The draw rate would almost certainly take a monumental hit (:

A fingerfehler, Jack. I think it is 1903 not 2003.

You are, of course, 100% correct, Wayne. Thank you.

The ICCF has a number of thematic events every year. Different themes.

They have a preliminary round with the first two place finishers going to the final round. It's two games per opponent, one game with each colour. The games aren't rated because of the fixed opening positions.

At Ottawa's RA Chess Club, Garland Best runs an annual theme tournament. By coincidence, this coming year's theme is the Vienna Gambit.:)

Buenos Aires 1994 was a tribute to Lev Polugaevsky - a Sicilian thematic tournament, double-round with 8 world-class players.

All games began with 1.e4 c5 2.Sf3 e6/d6/Sc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4. Salov won ahead of Anand, Ivanchuk, Polgar, Kamsky, Karpov, Shirov and Ljubojevic.

It was immortalized in the tournament book Sicilian Love.
