    Alekhine-Euwe 1935 Video

Youtube has a video of the opening and closing of the match for the World Chess Championship between World Champion Alexander Alekhine and Dr. Max Euwe, the challenger, in Bellevue, Amsterdam, October to December 15, 1935.

There is a speech and then the two players play a few moves of the Budapest Gambit. The schmaltzy music that accompanies this bit, I believe, is “Mighty lak’ a rose”.

Euwe is at the exhibition board speaking.

Alekhine speaks in French at the final ceremony and congratulates the winner, calling him a gentleman.

He says that Euwe will always be his friend, in German, and brings down the house.

Alekhine’s mannerisms at the first, while seated at the table, reminded me strongly of a present day player – Vassily Ivanchuk!

    The running time is 4:56

Fascinating! Dr. Max Euwe seemed at times awkwardly shy and when congratulated and complimented by Dr. Alekhine was in an agony of embarrassment (is that the appropriate saying). Dr. Alekhine certainly knew how to posture (playing it cool).

Wasn't that the match where Euwe played the Winawer 4 times and scored only half a point from the games? In the rematch he forgot to play the Winawer and lost the match and title.

      Trivia.
