  • "Keres" - correct pronunciation?

Just wondering about the correct pronunciation of the name "Keres".

Normally - I (and most people) would pronounce it as "Care-Rays". It's usually written in French as "Kérès" - giving a pronunciation of roughly "Kay-Rehs". In Russian, it's "KEPEC" - or roughly "Keh-Rehs".

    What is the correct way?

I have always pronounced it “KEHR-ush” i.e. with the accent on the first syllable and the terminal consonant a soft “s” approaching the “sh” sound.

This is interesting, looks pretty accurate for most of the other names:

I seem to recall that when Keres visited Vancouver (in 1975), it was established that KARE-ess was closest to the correct pronunciation. BTW, over the years I've heard KARES, KEERS, KARE-esh, KeREEZ, and other odd variants, none of which is correct.
