    Re: Spraggett - Short

GM Spraggett's miniature win over GM Short reminded me of GM Fischer's win over GM Geller from Bled 1961!! :)

Same variation (Ruy Lopez, Modern Steinitz); same ECO code (C72); same colour winning; same number of moves (22); similar patterns of Black chasing sacrificed material at the expense of development; Black didn't get castled in either game; White's QN exchanges itself for Black's KB; White's QB comes to f4; White's Q penetrates to b7 to herald the game's pending conclusion; and even the same Black K-side pieces (KN, KR) were left undeveloped when the game finished! It's quite extraordinary!!

    Here is Fischer -- Geller: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 d6 5.0-0 Bg4 6.h3 Bh5 7.c3 Qf6 8.g4 Bg6 9.d4 Bxe4 10.Nbd2 Bg6
    [This bishop has now moved five times in Black's ten moves] 11.Bxc6+ bxc6 12.dxe5 dxe5 13.Nxe5 Bd6 14.Nxg6 Qxg6 15.Re1+ Kf8 16.Nc4 h5 17.Nxd6 cxd6 18.Bf4 d5 19.Qb3 hxg4 20.Qb7 gxh3+ 21.Bg3 Rd8 22.Qb4+ 1-0.

Very astute observation Frank. I wonder what Nigel would say if he was told he lost like Geller? I think Kevin would be happier knowing he played like Fischer.

        Re: Spraggett - Short

The e-mag Chess Evolution (which I absolutely adore!) has annotations to Spraggett - Short, Gibraltar 2014 by GM Csaba Balogh. According to Csaba 10.e5 is a novelty. He awards 6 different moves for White exclamation marks - and finishes with "a magnificent and perfect game for GM Spraggett". Hi marks for Kevin but I doublt it will make Nigel feel any better.
