  • Why Does Chesstalk Time Out After 5 Minutes

Does anyone else find it very annoying that Chesstalk
times you out as being logged on after only 5 minutes or
    so?

Really, I mean I am writing a reply to some post, which
admittedly does take some thought and time sometimes.
Then when I try to post it, I find out I am already logged
    out by the system.

So I have to save my post, then log on again, then fetch my
post, then post it all over again.

Is this kind of heavy-handed (and just plain stupid and
    thoughtless) website control, really necessary
just to defeat a few hacker types??

I've never had that problem and they tell me I write a lot of posts. Could it be something other than the message board timing you out?

Doesn't time out on me either, though I rarely reply at length. Maybe it is a setting in your browser.

Ed, there's your problem. And yes, I sometimes have that problem too.
        For some, it isn't a problem! :)

            Hi Ed:

I think five minutes is a bit on the slight side, but I understand why websites that authenticate require a login timeout. When logging in, do you select "Remember me" which will set-up a pseudo-permanent cookie, so in theory you never time-out.

As Chris Mallon said, check your browser settings. I've got one browser installed and set-up to*never* accept cookies. Wherever I go with that I have to login on every page click.

P.S. It *would* be a good idea if somebody went through the user list and deleted all of the 'bot "users".

Only an admin can do that, otherwise I might do it myself. Once that task was completed, we would probably have to change things so that there was a delay in applying for a new account on ChessTalk. If we didn't do that, then the bot accounts would just return with new names.

For security reasons, I decline "remember me". But it should not mean, remember me this session,
but remember me on this terminal for all time.

If their cookies are timing out too soon, then it is usually their fault. Often done to get rid of inactive
                users bogging the system down.

On the other hand, my InPrivate (IE) is always on, but that shouldn't be causing it.
