.....does playing blitz chess help your slow game?

As the tournament nears conclusion, the best result is by Artem Samsonkin of Toronto in the 'B' group with 5 1/2 points, only one point behind the leader with one round to go! He scored 3 wins, 5 draws, 0 losses.
In the 'C' group, best is local Roman Sapozhnikov, another regular in our Saturday blitz tournament. He scored 4 wins,
2 draws and 2 losses. Nikita Kraouchkine is half a point back with 4 1/2.
In Group A2, Eric Hansen, facing 7 players all rated over 2400, scored 2 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses.

So has regular blitz play helped or hindered Artem and Roman? - I don't know if the others play blitz regularly.

I think it's obvious that playing blitz will improve one's chess ability but, like any other form of practice or study, the exercise is subject to diminishing returns.

Does anyone know if Hansen will achieve an IM norm if he wins his final two games?
everytime it hurts, it hurts just like the first (and then you cry till there's no more tears)

I imagine that he may get a norm, even though it would depend on what are the exact ratings of the last two opponents. But, him winning the last 2 games is not too likely. Basically if he wins the last 2 games his score would be 4.5/9 thus his average opponent rating would need to be 2451 or higher.

and/or does playing slow games help your blitz chess?

        My 2¢:
Blitz chess is great for trying out new openings and dealing with time pressure but I would say playing slow games helps my blitz chess more so than the other way around. Slow chess improves your ability to play accurately (more time to study the nuances of the position); playing too much blitz chess without slow games in between causes you to play sloppier over the long haul and the tendency is there to develop bad habits.

Canadians Eric Hansen and Victor Plotkin both played in the AeroFlot blitz, finishing 8.5 & 7.5 out of 18 respectively, ahead of many GMs.

Who are the players? The second spectator from the right (the short lad) looks like Roman Sapozhnikov.

Seems to me, that Roman kibitzes Mamedyarov - Karjakin (back) game.
