Quaint island - looks like a fishing village. I was there twice for the British Isles backgammon championship in '85 (which I won and in '86 (no luck :() The capital, Douglas, is where George MacDonald Fraser (wrote the Flashman series) lived out his retirement.
Douglas had no good restaurants that I could find (unless you like boiled beef) and one small casino right in the hotel where I stayed. How small? Seems I cleaned them out at blackjack - they had to pay me out all in five pound notes LOL.
Nice place to visit - wouldn't want to live there though. -

And I forgot to mention, they used to have the British motorcycle championship racing through the twisting streets of Douglas - the streets lined by ancient ten foot stone walls. You wouldn't want to lose control on a turn - would leave an ugly smear on one of the walls. But then MC racers like to live dangerously!Comment

I lived there for 2 years (in fact, I won the Douglas chess championship). Of course, I highly recommend any tournament involving this company :DComment

When I was studying in England I used to look forward to reading The Guardian during the Christmas holidays.
In it, every year, appeared a general knowledge quiz that was set at King William’s College. This is an International Baccalaureate School for ages 3 to 18, situated near Castletown on the Isle of Man.
The quiz is considered the most difficult in the world.
The pupils sit the test twice; once unseen on the day before the holidays and once again when they return after spending their vacation researching the answers.
It is now voluntary, a common score being two correct answers out of several hundred. It is like doing a mental super-marathon.
