General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.

The OYCC is well under way! what a great first day! everything going quite smoothly.
Round 3 pairings and Standings after 2 are all up on the OYCC site: www.oycc.ca*
I have a question: In the U 18 Open, it was won by a Junior Girl, Rebecca Giblon. Congratulations Rebecca (from an older past opponent). In the CYCC, the rule is that if an Open section is won by a junior girl, then she must also play in the Open section at the WYCC to be an "official representative". There is a bursary for the Ont. Champion to help defray expenses to the 2014 CYCC. Does the same rule apply at the OYCC level? Must Rebecca play in the WYCC U 18 Open, to receive the OYCC bursary?

I heard from announcement, bursary only given to the same section in CYCC as played in OYCC, Rebecca belonged to U18G section in OYCC actually.
U16G was won by a U14 girl, according this rule, she must play in U16G in CYCC to get bursary, however as many know that CYCC rule doesn't allow younger age play up, so she couldn't get the bursary? and the bursary will give to 2nd and 3rd place? or the CYCC will allow younger kids play up if they can win provincial YCC?
just wondering if there is clear rule regarding CYCC how a younger age can play up, such as win provincial YCC, or highest rating in the older age section?

Rebecca registered for the under 18 girls section. She was the only player to register. They combined sections. She won the combined section. I don't believe that Patrick's intention is to force Rebecca to play in under 18 open at CYCC which is what I believe is your question.

Hi Vlad:
Thanks. I agree - if she was really registered in the U 18 Girls, but had to play in a combined section, then she clearly should get the bursary to play in the CYCC U 18 Girls.
Likewise then, Tony Bao would be the winner of the U 18 Open, and he'd get the bursary for that section at the CYCC.
The tournament seemed to be well enjoyed by many. Patrick McDonald had help from many - Ed Thompson, Brian Clarke, Tom McClelland, Mahmud Hassain, Eva Michno, Kai Gauer come to mind and there were many others. Liza Orlova was a hit on Saturday. Brian Clarke on all the top boards (I think all 24) on Easter Sunday morning took off all the knights and substituted chocolate Easter bunnies. The girl participants loved them, the boys not so much. Nice spontaneous idea!

Great job, as they do every year, by so many folks who make the OYCC one of the best run and most enjoyable tournaments:
- Patrick as overall organizer, and Eva assisting.
- Brian as arbiter for the older sections and girls sections was always reasonable while remaining fully in control.
- Hans, Liza (and now Mahmud this year too) for donating their valuable time in 3 separate simul games.
- Andrew Peredun (not mentioned above) who generously analyzed games and gave a mini lecture.

Bob, thanks for your good wishes to Rebecca. I can confirm that Vlad is 100% correct. I registered Rebecca in Girls U18. As the only entry in that section, it was decided that it made the most sense to combine her in the Open U18 section. In past years, Patrick has announced that the section in which each player entered is where they can apply their bursary for the CYCC. Therefore, Rebecca's bursary is towards CYCC Girls U18. Likewise, Tony Bao was announced as the winner of Open U18 and his bursary is towards CYCC Open U18. That principle has also applied in the past to players who chose to play up a section or two, although I don't know if the CYCC allows players to play up (both the NAYCC and WYCC allow this).
I also want to point out that there were 3 other girls and 1 other boy who scored a perfect 5 / 5 this year:

George, hi - can you point us to the "CYCC rule doesn't allow younger age play up", e.g. is it in the entry form, the CFC handbook, or elsewhere? My recollection is that players in the past have been allowed to play up at the CYCC.
