General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Someone mentioned recently that it might be of interest to chess players to have, in book form, the complete array of chess columns written by Bent Larsen. To follow up on this idea, I went back to an interview with GM Larsen as it appeared in the original Chess Canada in 1974. Reading through the interview I was reminded what an easy man Larsen was to talk to. In fact, the entire interview took the form of a casual conversation – there were no previously prepared questions which would have made the interview stiff and artificial. What we ended up with was a friendly living-room chat – and in fact it took place in my living-room at Chess Canada, 170 Wychwood Avenue.
Vlad,
There is the option of uploading the document to Dropbox and posting a link here on Chesstalk. I use Dropbox whenever I have a large file to share that is too big to send by email.
Yes, there must be a way. The file is actually a scanned image so why can it not be posted like a photo?
And then what is a dropbox? and how would I recognize one if I saw one?

Great interview.
CC -It has been said that [player] wins many games that other grandmasters give up as drawn. Whys is that?
Larsen: [Player], like others who try to win, does so just because he tries.
[Player] - who is he?
Vlad, send me the files and we will figure out how to post them.
It certainly would be good to have a collection of all the Chess Canada Larsen columns together – either as a file of the scan or printed up in a booklet. I would buy a copy.
If you are going to do this, you should be aware that a new edition of his games annotated by himself is coming out this month. I don’t know what the overlap will be.

Bent Larsen (1935-2010) was one of the greatest fighters chess has ever seen. His uncompromising style and his unorthodox thinking made Larsen popular with chess players all around the globe. Larsen also was a highly original chess writer and an extremely productive chess journalist.
This collection brings together more than 120 of Larsen’s best games, annotated by himself. His comments are lucid, to the point, instructive and humorous.

Dan
I installed this program to my computer :( Took quite some time. Then got a message from my firewall that some features of the program were being blocked - malware?
Not wanting to risk this, I initiated an Uninstall sequence. Got another message that I needed permission from 'program administrator' to uninstall. Tried again, and this time it worked (I hope).
Even a collector such as myself will stop and think twice about buying a 1100-page volume, in Danish, costing $70!
But the details are these:
Larsen by Jan Lofberg, Danska Pocket Book, 2014,
414kr (Swedish) = $70 CAN
This is Volume 1 of the ultimate three-volume work on the Danish chess grandmaster Bent Larsen (1935-2010). The biography that is lavishly illustrated with period photos, tackles both man and chess player Bent Larsen.
Volume 1 is also a fascinating account of his chess career right from his boyhood in Holstebro to breakthrough as a candidate for the world championship of chess.
I take it your point about price is not the $70 (which is cheap for 1100 pages Of GM Larsen) but the fact that it is in Danish. Still it is a worthwhile addition to any collection. Im sure an English translation will appear in a year or two.
