General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Brian told me he wants the tournament professionally run, and one item is getting started on time, which almost never happens with late, last-minute entries. Why can't chess players plan ahead like they do in chess?
I do agree with you though, that an on-line credit card immediate payment option would have been more modern - Mei Chen Lee did this for at least one of her Chessca tournaments.

I agree that starting on time is important, and I respect the wish to have a professionally run tournament... but if its this difficult to attend given the scheduled dates and difficulty of registration, Im just going to save my money for Edmonton. =]
I'm not sure, but I think it has the registration form.
I'd do an e-mail to Larry Bevand to let him know about Ottawa. As far as I know, that's not the arrangement with Brian Fiedler, and he's advertising " in person " registrations at Strategy Games, and they are getting publicity in exchange.
In my opinion, Aris Marghetis of Ottawa has the most effective Central Canadian method of ensuring ease of player access to chess events, combined with smooth operating conditions and starting rounds on time. I think that this major upcoming Toronto event, the most important held in that city for several years, should learn some practical details from Aris, in order to boost player interest and participation, so that this really becomes something special.:)
I Called CMA in Ottawa and they are not accepting the payment, they only give out the entry forms. Are the entry forms available online?
Hmmm....
Hi Sanjiv,
I don't know what happened but...as of tomorrow...registrations at ALL our locations are possible...maybe there was a communication problem....I am trying to be generous here :)
Hi Larry, thank for all you are doing. But I did call and speak to Brad at his home today and he said that the message from Montreal was to give out the forms for this game. It would be nice if you can clarify this.

Hi Sanjiv,
As of tomorrow you will be able to register at our Ottawa location. I will speak to our Ottawa staff.
Seeing as CMA is listed as a sponsor, will you be distributing flyers at your excellent CMA youth tournaments and accepting Toronto Open registration at those events?
When The Toronto Open got over 300 players in the 1970s it was partly because of a huge number of new players in the Novice section. I think for the Toronto Open to get over 300 it will need to attact some of the 1,000 of kids playing in CMA rated tournaments in Toronto.
Maybe offer a free Toronto Open entry fee as part of first place prizes in CM events.
It's going to be a good tournament - you won't want to miss it !
Bob
P.S. How about if I reimburse you for the snail mail stamp when I see you at the tournament? How can you pass that offer up? but I know the exam period timing is a bummer.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the offer. I have no doubt the tournament will be nice and I would enjoy myself.
Its not the cost of sending mail that is the issue, it just seems like such a hassle. I know it probably seems like nothing to alot of people, but its just annoying for me to mail something when I usually can just email a registration and pay on site. Maybe my generation is just spoiled =]
In addition, if I cant pay by cash on site I would prefer to register by a credit card, but I understand that is not always available.
To be honest though, its more of a timing issue that makes it difficult. I have an exam on the 22nd, and paying for the round trip bus plus entry fee just doesn't really make sense when Im broke enough as is. Although I would win the u2000 section anyways (kidding!), I don't want to be worrying about my exam the whole time.
Im sure Ill see you in the summer (SCC perhaps)
