  • Tanraj Sohal sets new records!

12 years ago, Tanraj Sohal of Surrey, B.C. started playing tournament chess at a regional for the B.C. Chess Challenge. He qualified for the provincial and went on to represent B.C. at the Nationals in Montreal where he placed third. This was to be the start of a 12 year saga which saw him represent his province every year...finishing first 9 times! and 3rd the other 3 times! Just a totally impressive result which the Chess'n Math Association, organizers of the Canadian Chess Challenge, have marked this achievement with a special award of $1,200...$100 for each of the 12 years :).

There was a piece on Tanraj on Global TV recently where the reporter, who had done a report back in 2003 on Tanraj comes back this year for an update. You get to see Tanraj then and now.

We have a photo of Tanraj with his 12 trophies. Go to: http://chesstalk.com/photos/IMG00221-20140524-2106.jpg

Congratulations Tanraj! This is a Canadian first!

This is fantastic!! What Larry has done for Canadian chess cannot be overestimated. Working for Larry is of course another question altogether. :)
