As the number one rated player in both Rapid and Blitz, Hikaru Nakamura drew the lots to  determine the colors yesterday. Whichever color he chose, all odd number players would also play in  the first round, while even numbered seeds would play the opposite. For the Rapid he drew  black, and for the Blitz he drew white.

The lone commentator is GM Dmitriy Komarov. He was born in the Ukraine in 1968. There is this story about him:

At the Christmas tournament of 2004/05 in Reggio Emilia, Ukrainian GM Dmitry Komarov, playing an Italian whose rating was significantly lower, obtained a big advantage, but while looking for a forced win he got into time-trouble and his flag fell on the control move. "Do you want a draw?", he asked his opponent, who a few moves previously couldn't have dreamt of such a result. Hesitatingly, the Italian agreed, although by all the laws of ruthless sportsmanship he should have called the arbiter so that Komarov's defeat could be registered.

Commenting on Morozevich-Nakamura, he notes that the book on the table next to Hikaru is “The Last of the Last”.

It is about Claude Choules, the final survivor of the First World War – 109 years old in 2010.

When I was studying in Manchester, one weekend, a team from the Manchester Chess Club travelled to York for a match. That would have been the summer of 1971.

Before the games we walked on the city walls. These date from Roman times and you walk on a sidewalk protected by the walls. I seem to remember that they are about 12 – 15 feet high at most, with no danger whatever.

I looked at one of my companions, Roy Waterhouse, and he was sweating profusely and short of breath. He had a fear of heights and we got him down as quickly as we could.

The point of the story is that what was “high” for him was not high to anyone else.

Fast forward to the present. There is an ad they are running for the Dubai Rapid and Blitz that shows two men playing chess in the open air. One is dressed in a conventional suit the other, in the white robe called the dishdash.

After there is a result and the two shake hands, the camera draws back and you see that the table is in the centre of the helipad at the Burj Al Arab Hotel. That’s the one that looks like the sail of a ship. The helipad is perched 210 km above the water. Now there is a place to make your knees quiver beneath you!

I can’t imagine even walking out on that platform and I am watching it on my computer's monitor!

It has been fascinating to watch the strong grandmasters who had a slow start begin to percolate up to the top. Carlsen and Aronian are leading with Svidler and Anand just behind them.

Ian Nepomniachtchi has unfortunately been consistently good. I say unfortunately, because his surname is the darndest to type up without making a mistake. I wish there were something I could do.

It reminds me of an old story. During a summer heat wave at the beginning of the last century, a cart horse died on Roncesvalles Avenue in Toronto. A policeman had to write up the report and found the greatest difficulty spelling ‘Roncesvalles’, so he dragged the dead beast over to Queen Street and wrote up his report there!

Aronian (7.5) has White tomorrow in his match tomorrow morning (7 a.m. EST) with Carlsen (8.0) which should make him the slight favourite. Moreover, he's also 5 against Carlsen in shorter time controls according to chessgames.com, 11 -6 =13

Aronian threw away his win with 35.Qf3+?? so Carlsen (now 8.5/11) remains a 1/2 point ahead with 4 rounds to play. Joining Aronian in joint 2nd with 8/11 are Anand (who beat Nepo), Caruana (who beat Svidler), Tomashevsky (who beat Nguyen), and Yu (who beat Grischuk).
