Why isn't your son playing? A good chance for the IM title.

The timing didn't work for him. He has 2 EQAO tests this week and 2 other exams next week. The organizers didn't care too much that school in Canada goes till the end of June.

The standings are now posted on line. Our IA Aris Marghetis is the arbiter in the U18.

That's too bad. What upcoming events will your son be playing? World Open and Canadian Open I imagine. Hopefully he can get the norms and maybe even a GM norm.

Total turnout looks like just under 300 players ...Canada represents about 17% of the field....it looks like the dates were not only an issue for us.

Canada (Toronto 2013) still has the record for attendance with over 350 players :).

Very exciting last round. 5 players with 5 1/2 have chances for the IM title.

                  WARNING: CONTAINS CONSPIRACY FODDER

There are 20 players in the U18, 5 are from outside the USA.
                  • All five non-US players got more Blacks than Whites.
                  • Every one of the top 4 US players (tied for the lead going into the last round) got more Whites than Blacks.

                  :p

David Itkin with 5 points also has some chances.

If the top two boards both draw and David can duplicate Jason Cao's feat in R8 of beating the #2 seed, Justus Williams, then both David and Jason would be in a 5-way tie for 1st. I believe the IM title would then hedge upon a Rapid/Blitz play-off (:

                        Re: NAYCC - U18 Open

highly doubtful, David's just playing the role of spoiler. With 5 guys tied for first, it is highly unlikely the top two boards will draw seeing that an IM title is up for stake.

I don't believe there are play-off games for the titles. See last year standings.

Is it WFM or straight FM?
The event website does not say that 2nd place in U18g gets a WFM title, it says she gets the FM title.
(my guess it that this is an error on their website... but maybe... :D)
