      Edmonton International 2014

I believe Vassily Ivanchuk’s last three tournaments have been Tradewise Gibraltar, Latvian Railway Rapid and the 49th Capablanca Memorial. The Havana tournament was particularly dismal, he not winning a game. It is good to see that he has snapped back.

        Edmonton International
        Round Three
        June 23, 2014
        Ivanchuk, Vassily – Yam, Alex
        A31 English, Symmetrical Variation

        1. d4 Nf6 2. Nf3 c5 3. c4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 e5 5. Nb5 d5 6. cxd5 Bc5 7. N5c3 O-O 8. h3 b5 9. a3 e4 10. e3 a6 11. g4 Bb7 12. Bg2 Re8 13. O-O Re5 14. Nd2 Qe7 15. Qc2 Nxd5 16. Ndxe4 Nxc3 17. Bd4 f6 34. Rh1 Rc8 35. Rch7 Re5 1-0

From the guys on chessbomb it appears that Alex spent 35 minutes on 8…b5.

On move 24 he had to make 16 moves in 2 minutes, whereas Vassily had 20 minutes. The only help was the 30-second increment.

Alex had no time to speak of for his last moves – it was really a yam to the slaughter.

          Wayne,
next time you choose a title for a thread you might pick one that doesn't get dated. This one suggests that only round #1 games are the topic. And for that matter, Round 3 produced the Panjwani - So gem, especially for those who like tactical games ..... go to >>>>>>>

Raja did not deserve a zero for this game! He had to work so hard! Only to run very low on time - when ChessBomb gave him so much red paint on his final moves.
An Alekhine style game! AA might have won this game for either side.

              Vlad,

You are perfectly right about the title of this thread being dated.

I had planned to monitor Ivanchuk’s games each night and give the bare scores and I didn’t want to start a third thread. In retrospect, a mistake.

If Micah Hughey agrees, the title could be changed to ‘Edmonton International 2014’ and we could go to town on the comments!
