  • World Open - standings & live games

A number of players have 2 1/2 points after three rounds of play - although the wall chart has not been updated yet. Among them is
Richard Wang of Edmonton who drew his round three game with GM Isan Reynaldo Ortiz Suarez 2592 of Cuba. Of the four live games available, two are still being shown >>>>>>> http://www.worldopen.com
Hopefully, the wall chart will be updated soon.

Two young Canadians are on a roll! Richard Wang and Razvan Preotu. Each has posted plus scores against two GM's.

    Richard scored as follows >>>>>>
    w vs GM Conrad Holt.........USA
= vs GM Isan Reynaldo Ortiz Suarez....Cuba

    Razvan scored >>>>>>>>>
w vs GM Yuri Gonzalez Vidal......Cuba
    = vs GM Yury Shulman..........USA

Anton Kovalyev of Montreal also has 2 1/2 after three games but all against untitled players. Anton is paired on board #4 this morning so his game should appear on the live games board.

Great going guys! ....and bring home a shopping bag full of $100 bills!

The tournament leaders all drew their games. Anton Kovalyov and Razvan Preotu both won allowing them to move into a five-way tie for the lead with 3 1/2 points from four games.
          Thus far Razvan scored >>>>>>>>>
w vs GM Yuri Gonzalez Vidal 2546 ......Cuba
= vs GM Yury Shulman 2568..........USA
w vs GM Timur Gareyev 2640.......USA
.....which is well on his way to a GM norm!....!!!

The tie for the lead is 8-way not 5-way as I previously posted. The X-table and round 5 pairings are now posted.

It seems Razvan is the only non-GM in the top eight.

Keep this momentum till the end, Razvan. It should be a good feeling to have more points than Kamsky LOL

Re: World Open - standings & live games

In round 5, the 2Canadians in the lead group, GM Kovalyov and FM Preuto went separate ways. Kovalyov made what seems to be an anti-positional move f6 and overcame the non-development of 2 pieces to win with 2 passed pawbns on the queenside.
Meanwhile, the young FM Razvan Preotu 2341, has to defeat GM Timur Gareyev 2640 of USA in round 4, drew with GM Yury Shulman 2560 in round 3, outwitted GM Yuri Gonzales Vidal 2546 of Cuba in round 2 and besting Christopher Shell 1918 of USA to "gain the honor" (or should it be the other way around?) of playing GM Smirin. . In round 5, Razvan faced the Sicilian O'Kelly of GM Ilya SMirin of Israel. Ilya's Ng5 looked like a brillinat strategy, resulting to threats on the pawn on e7, and together with the backward c6 pawn, successfully created a winning attack on the black king. Razvan resigned on White's 28th move, targetting the g6 and c6 pawns simultaneously.
Razvan has 2.5/4 vs GMs with far higher ratings than him. As i have boldly predicted a few years ago, Razvan can become a grandmaster pretty soon.
This would make playing on Vlad Dobrich's Saturday rapid extremely attractive whenever Razvan plays.

From today's playing: Anton Kovalyov - Ilya Smirin 0-1. Unfortunately!

Razvan has played GMs in 6 consecutive rounds now (2 through 7) and acquitted himself remarkably well, two wins, one loss, and three draws!

Yes, and his sole loss was to tournament leader Ilya Smirin. Now in round 8 he is paired with GM Fishfood .....er Fishbean. .....should be a gimme for Razvan.

Go Razvan and Anton! It's wonderful to see them playing so well. Anton is getting in shape for this Olympiad, and I hope Razvan has his eye on the next one!

Re: World Open - standings & live games

                            From the Monroi games:
Round 8: Kovalyov lost to Holt; Cheng drew Denton.
Round 9: Kovalyov drew Shmelov; Cheng beat Sheng.

Monroi did 16 boards - not sure if they were the top 16 or not - if so, Bindi had quite a tournament!. These are the only Canadian names I found for rounds 8 and 9.

Maybe the Monroi site is the only one that is working? The 'official' website that Vlad D. mentioned
in the start of this thread ( http://www.worldopen.com/ ) seems rather broken at this moment ...
Best of luck to all my compatriots in this tournament!
