  • Stan Vaughan....

I'll start a new thread on this. A reference was made (in another thread) to Stan Vaughan winning a lawsuit against FIDE. For those of you not familiar with this character (he is "World Chess Champion"), here are some links.

From the late 1990's (even if it is a Sam Sloan link) - artificially inflating a student's rating allowing them to qualify by rating for the WYCC:

    From 2008:

    From 2009:

From 2013 (I'm surprised the date was not April 1):

Vaughan has also applied for sainthood for Bobby Fischer - quoting several "miracles":

Interesting, however is his lawsuit against FIDE real or not? What do you think?

It's totally real... in his head! ;)

Seems to be a... special guy. Any community large enough is bound to have its bozo(s). And it's a shame because instead of using their energy for something positive, they tend to use is for something negative (lawsuits etc).

There is also such thing as a SLAPP or Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation. It is mostly the strategy of powerful corporations with deep pockets.

SLAPPs are often brought by corporations, real estate developers, or government officials and entities against individuals or organizations who oppose them on public issues. Typically, SLAPPs are based on ordinary civil tort claims such as defamation (libel or slander), malicious prosecution, abuse of power, conspiracy, and interference with prospective economic advantage.

While most SLAPPs are legally meritless, they can effectively achieve their principal purpose: to chill public debate on specific issues. Defending a SLAPP requires substantial money, time, and legal resources, and thus diverts the defendant’s attention away from the public issue. Equally important, however, a SLAPP also sends a message to others: you, too, can be sued if you speak up.
Lawsuits can also have a purpose which is to silence opposition.

I find no other references to the lawsuit (or at least the outcome) except on the Spraggett site, and his source is Stan Vaughan himself! :-)

I checking the US Patents and Trademarks site to find any references to any legal action.

Thank you very much, now I feel uncomfortable bringing up this issue. I thought that Kevin's blog is fairly reliable.

Do not trust everthing posted as factual.

For instance today Kevin posted a video, one that I found very eloquent. However he also wrote "Hemant Mehta ... went to Iraq last month and was beheaded as soon as he explained his views… The authorities are not sure which group killed him…".

I went to look this up and could find no reports supporting this. Indeed I found Hemant's blog and found he posted only yesterday.

An example of a response from the US Patents and Trademarks office when he tried to register the FIDE logo for himself:
