Some first-round "upsets" (but remember - it's still early in the tournament):

    Torre (2221) 1-0 Regan (2405)
    Jiang (2185) 1-0 Bolduc (2314)
    Kovalyov (2506) 1/2 Szalay (2236)
    Hébert (2441) 1/2 Qin (2226)

Defending champion Mihnea Voloaca won his first game.

289 registrants - maybe more will start round 2.

      Trois-Rivieres after 2 rounds

After two rounds there are only three perfect scores in the Open: GM Bator Sambuyev, Lefonh Hua, and last year's champion Mihnea Voloaca. Young Kelly Wang has 1.5/2 in the U1600 section.

You beat me by 1 minute Hugh...sheesh you are a tough cookie :)

BTW...this is the BEST OPEN WEEKEND annual chess tournament in Canada...it is sad that there are not more players from the rest of Canada that take part...

            Hi Hugh:

            Wow - 238 advance entries ( and 323 entries in 2005 ).

Gives the hyped PwC Toronto Open something to shoot for !! We've a ways to go yet, with 63 advance entries one month before the tournament - will GTA players ( and further afield ) show up in the numbers shown here in Quebec?? Brian Fiedler has advised that the ideal maximum would be around 250, though there is apparently room for 300.

After 4 rounds: Bator Sambuev beat Jean Hébert to retain his perfect score. GM Anton Kolalyov and IM Arnaud Rainfray both won, and both have 3.5/4. Masters Voloaca, Massé. and Torre all lost to players 100-200 points beneath them.
