  • Trois-Rivieres - Bator Sambuev - $1700 richer

GM Bator Sambuev won the Mauricie Open in Trois-Rivieres (Quebec) with 4.5/5. He drew his last round game with GM Anton Kovalyov - winning $1700.

Three players finished with 4/5: Anton Kovalyov ($450), Kris Laptos ($450), and Lloyd Mai ($500). The big money winners in the other sections:

U2000: Jonathan Perron, Raymond Thomas, and Claude Lalumiere each finished with 4/5 and each won $583.33.

U1800: 7-way tie with 4/5 - each winning $296.66. (my sympathies to Richard Azimov who lost his last round game - at least he won enough to pay his bus fare back to Montreal :-) )

    U1600: Réjean Gagnon and Alexandre Ber - 4.5/5 - each won $750.

    U1400: Maxime Lemire-Paquin (5-0) won $1000; Vincent Nantel (4.5-0.5) won $500.

    U1200: Felix Leroux (4.5-0.5) won $700.

    Hi Hugh:

I note the size of the prizes in the classes ! Is this part of what attracts such a large turnout?

Do the classes subsidize the top section with their registration fees?

      Re: Trois-Rivieres - Bator Sambuev - $1700 richer

The tournament announcement showed prizes of $1000,500,250, and a $125 class prize in each of the the U2000, U1800, U1600, and U1400 sections. As far as I can see, these were the prizes given out (as well as a slightly different arrangement for the U1200 section).

However - the tournament announcement showed Open section prizes of $1000,500,250, and $850 in 5 class prizes. ($1750 in non-class prizes). Since the number of entries exceeded the "based on" number, the excess was added to the top three Open prizes, resulting in $3050 in non-class prizes being distributed. There may have been cash from other sources added as well.

Yes - the $1000 first prizes definitely are an attraction to the players :-)
