you know that CanBase is missing a lot of correspondence games right? or perhaps that is deliberate? A source for them is here:

          I think you can almost give Roman's 1.e4 a ?! (:

Tiviakov is lethal with his Qd6/c6 Scandinavian. The first 26 times Tiviakov played this line, and mostly against elite GMs (e.g. Anand, Grischuk, Svidler, et al), he scored 5 wins, 0 losses, and 21 draws, a rather remarkable record with the Black pieces.

            Re: Some Canadian Open games....

Correspondence games (in general) are not in CanBase (except for some Sarosy and Zalys games) - due to the large number of incomplete games, and whether they were played without outside help. Same goes for computer and Internet games (in general). Likewise - I omit recent simuls, since there is nothing spectacular about a GM simul nowadays. When your city saw one or two of the world's few dozen GM's a year - then a GM simul meant something.

Hugh, Thanks for posting Canadian Open games! I particularly enjoyed the Fed's win in the Benko Gambit in Rd1 (and still enjoy his book on the Benko!) with tripled D-pawns (altho just one move alas) and great pawn play and lots of chess humour!

I know. It's awful. You already have enough garbage games in CanBase.

Sorry Hugh. It's what I'm thinking and I can't resist typing it.

What's the problem? I think it's a good idea to have a database of OTB tournament games. Even though some games are between relatively weak players, who cares. The idea is to have a good picture of OTB tournament play in Canada.

So, having separate databases is a good idea, IMO. And, even better, you can merge the files yourself if you really need one database with everything.

So, having separate databases is a good idea, IMO. And, even better, you can merge the files yourself if you really need one database with everything.
One problem with having a lot of games that are between weak players (or with one weak player) is that the database could become rather useless for statistics like 'how often does this line win with white'. I will grant you that such statistics are dubious anyway unless the database is restricted to games among 2600 players; even in that case, the statistic might be valid but conclusions based on that are suspect.

I totally agree with you there. If I'm doing statistics on opening moves, I don't even think about using canbase. I'll rather use any big database of GM games.

What I like with canbase is that you can look up basically any player and you've got a good chance of finding some of his games. That's more useful than having a bunch of correspondance games in the mix.

Most (and all recent) games in CanBase have ratings attached, so that games between weaker players can be filtered out if necessary for statistical analysis.

The word is "correspondence" and not "correspondance". A dance is something you do when the music is playing.

You're correct, of course. It is far better to learn lines the players figured out in a few minutes or seconds than it is to learn lines people may have spent days working out. The road to success.

Recently I was going through one Spanish variation. There were like 5 games where Black mated in 14 moves, and it happened to dancers :)

Which variation? Usually you're in theory in that opening for close to 20 moves.

I've always thought every chess player should know how to play the Spanish from both sides.
