If my goal is exposure to a wide range of opening ideas, which of the Chessbase databases should I get:
    • Big
    • Mega
    • Encyclopedia

I believe the "Big" and "Mega" databases contain the same games (5.8 million), but "Mega" has many annotated. There are many free databases to download elsewhere as well. All would contain a wide range of openings.

Their opening encyclopedia is the best buy for the $$:
      • 800 CB opening surveys, which have lots of verbal explanations of openings.
      • all the annotated game in Mega,
      • almost as many total games as Mega.
      • it's about 40% cheaper than Mega.

The only thing it doesn't have that you get in Mega or Big is the photos of the players.

        Thanks, John.

Can the encyclopedia be used as the reference database?

Is it only available in DVD? What's the fastest way to get it?

Some items can be downloaded directly from the Chessbase site. Otherwise - you will have to wait for the CD to arrive - or pick it up at your local dealer. Of course - a Torrent site could be your friend. :-)

Mega Database is the best in my opinion. Not only does it have annotated games (lots of verbal annotations which is key) but you can also use it as a reference database.

Just make sure you update it with the TWIC's http://www.theweekinchess.com/twic

The problem with TWIC is that no first names are used - only initials. This may cause duplicate games to creep into your database. Use the Chessbase subscription service to keep Megabase up to date.
