Peter Zingeler, who was one of the organizers for the 1975 Canadian Closed and 1975 Can. Open, played in the Bowser active today and brought a photo alblum of the 1975 Closed. He graciously has allowed me temporary custody in order to scan the photos below.

Peter was my opponent in my very first tournament game.

Be warned that some people will appear younger than you would have ever thought possible......Names given where I (think I) recognize the person...Correct and add to the names if you know them...

Peter Zingeler is in the left photo with the mustache. Not sure of the rest - might be co-organizers? I thought maybe I recognized the person to the right of Peter as Virjillio Turingan (spelling?) although why he would be in this photo set, I don't know

Here is the crosstable of the event (I don't want to embarrass myself by making wild guesses at the photos - but I'm sure there's a young Dobrich in at least one of them):

A couple of them has a young Stephen Ball. Good memories. I played in the 1975 Canadian Open, stayed for the opening of the Closed and got to meet GM Abe Yanofsky.

You were there - you should know everybody :-)

I now think Scan C on the left is Stephen Ball. The hair threw me - I don't remember him having such a head of hair (long gone). Very seventies.

Some of the (shorter) beards would be quite fashionable today :) In fashion, as elsewhere, what goes around comes around...

I just remembered that Peter Biyiasas lost to Stephen Ball in the last round at Calgary 1975, but he had already clinched first place in the tournament by then. Writing in Chess Canada, Biyiasas described Ball as a talented player.

Yep, that was me - right pic, scan F - picture must have been taken early in the tournament which was a disaster for me. Tourney immediately followed the Canadian Open and all at the ancient time control: 40 moves/ 2 1/2 hours then 16 moves in the next hour. Then adjourn with sealed move to be resumed the next morning - followed by the next round. In all, around 25 games in as many days! After that, I didn't want to play chess anymore! Total burn-out!
