  • Polgar sisters vs Canadians

Now that all three Polgar sisters have retired from tournament play, it is time to look at their collective record against Canadian players. Here are my findings:

    A. Lesiege – J. Polgar 1:0 New York Open 1988
    J. Polgar – I. Ivanov 0:1 New York Open 1989

    Z. Polgar – I. Findlay 1/2 North Bay Open 1995
    J. Ochkoos – Z. Polgar 1:0 North Bay Open 1995
    Z. Polgar – M. Dougherty 1/2 North Bay Open 1995
    Z. Polgar – A. Littke 1:0 North Bay Open 1995
    Z. Polgar – K. Spraggett 1/2 Oviedo Rapid 1992

    A. Lesiege – S. Polgar 1:0 Bermuda Open 1995
    R. Livshits – S. Polgar 1:0 North Bay Open 1995
    E. Teodoro – S. Polgar 0:1 North Bay Open 1996

Barring other undetected games the collective score is a very respectable +5 -2 =3 for Canada.

    There are more.

I remember seeing Sofia playing at a tournament in Ontario in the mid-80s, I think it was at one of Hal's events, but it might have been a big tournament in Toronto.

There is also at least two games vs Canadians (wins over Maher Saleh and Eduardo Teodoro) at NBIO -- but there are also a lot of opponent's names I don't recognize who might be Canadian.

CanBase shows in addition to the games listed (some may be repeated - although the "Z" and "S" Polgars could be interchanged - in Hungarian, they were both "Z"; in English, they were both "S"):

Please let me know of any corrections I should make - I will also check the North Bay crosstables.

      A. Moussa - Sofia Polgar 1/2 North Bay 1995. I'm not sure if Moussa was actually Canadian, but he lived in Montreal for several years. He played in several Olympiads, representing Palestine.
      D. Hergott - Sofia Polgar 1/2 North Bay 1995
      Sofia Polgar - I. Findlay 1-0 North Bay 1995
      Sofia Polgar - E. Teodoro 1-0 North Bay 1995
Sofia Polgar - J. Guo 1-0 North Bay 1996 (was Joshua Guo Canadian?)
      M. Saleh - Sofia Polgar 0-1 North Bay 1996
      E. Teodoro - Sofia Polgar 0-1 North Bay 1996

Susan (Zsuzsa) drawing with: P. Backwith, I. Findlay, M. Dougherty, B. Hartman North Bay 1995
      Susan Polgar - A. Littke 1-0 North Bay 1995
      Susan Polgar - H. Jung 1-0 North Bay 1995
      J. Ochkoos - Susan Polgar 1-0 North Bay 1995

Guelph Spring Open, 18-20 April 1986: "The event was highlighted by the participation of 11-year old Hungarian sensation Sophia Polgar. Sophia is presently on tour across Canada as part of a campaign against drug abuse." [Hal Bond in En Passant #79, June 1986] The crosstable was published in the next issue; Sophia beat Peter Hollo and Marc Rasquin and lost to Deen Hergott, Brian Hartman, and David Southam for a provisional rating of 2026/5.

Hugh, would you like the game score for the database?

Just wondering if anyone has - or can dig up - the score of Alexandre LeSiege's win over Judit Polgar from the 1988 New York Open.

The games I quoted are from MegaBase and are based on full names. Z = Zsusza and S = Sofia.

Please post (or send me) any of the missing games. I will ask Alexandre Lesiege if he has the game (or can remember it). He would have been 13 years old at the time.
