And move the Canadian Closed to early July so he who wins the tournament may participate in the World Cup?Originally posted by Vlad Drkulec View PostRight now it looks like the Canadian Open will be shifted to mid August this year but that is still under discussion.

Nice work CFC president. Impressive.

A bump for this thread and the November 1st deadline.Originally posted by Vlad Drkulec View PostThere will be a deadline of November 1st, 2014 for organizers to submit preliminary proposals for organizing the first two tournaments under this program. We are not obliged to accept any proposals. We can always extend the deadline and work with organizers to formulate an acceptable proposal, if there is not enough detail.
CRITERIA
1. Allow for REALISTIC GM (and IM) norm opportunities for Canadian players.
2. New as opposed to an existing event.
3. Enhance the profile of chess in the area and Canada.

Re: FIDE Funding for IM/GM norm tournaments.Organizers take note
FIDE funding for the first year of the program in the amount of approximately $21,000 Canadian has been received and is in the CFC bank account. This will fund two tournaments. Several proposals are in the works I am told for tournaments in Ontario, Quebec, BC and Alberta. Contrary to the assertions of some, Kirsan does keep his promises.Last edited by Vlad Drkulec; Tuesday, 16th September, 2014, 05:12 PM.

Thank you for the clarification Hal, you sure know your stuff! I agree, it is sad to see Zonals squeezed like this. However, it was probably done for to conserve the integrity of the IM title.Originally posted by Hal Bond View PostZonals don't give out titles like they used to Andy. You have to finish at least equal first now for the IM title and the FM title requires 6.5/10 or 6/9, which used to be the IM title threshold. It's sad to see Zonals squeezed like this.
Anyone who has organized a norm tournament knows very well how expensive they are, and how important they are for our candidate players. Zonal or norm event - there is nothing funny about the challenges we face.

I beg to differ Gary. At the Zonal the players can forget about the norms and win the title straight out. Remember IM and FM titles are given.Originally posted by Gary Ruben View PostAt least with the norm events there will be players motivated to try to earn norms and titles.

What's so comical? Maybe there's a bigger demand for IM'GM norm events than for the Zonal tournaments. Do you think playing in a zonal where you know you'll donate a week of your time with what you realize is no chance of winning is a picnic? Not my idea of fun.Originally posted by Andy Shaw View PostIt is comical that we are discussin of ways of organizing IM/GM norm tournaments when the Canadian Zonal (both female and male) and the Canadian Open are not in the plans of being organized.
At least with the norm events there will be players motivated to try to earn norms and titles. You don't have to outright win an event to make a norm. I'd assume the participants will all be invited.
