This isn't a new event. It's been on the circuit in years past.

It was held in 1997 (Jakarta INA) and 1999 (Shenyang CHN), prior to Al-Ain UAE in 2012. The UAE seems to have rights to hold it every 2 years until 2020, and the 2012 (and upcoming 2014) versions will be held in late December. Each zone has the right to send a team (e.g. Canada), but the dates may discourage teams from the Western world.

Here are the rules for the 2012 event: http://www.fide.com/component/conten...ship-2012.html

        Thanks guys!

How many teams were involved in 2012?

I did not see it listed for 2014-15-16-17.

the event has huge potential in my opinion...

Things have to be tweaked...I (not CMA as it not kid based) would host such an event in a nano second with some tweaking....and reasonable FIDE fees LOL

There were 24 teams in 2012. Complete report at http://www.fide.com/component/conten...zayed-cup.html

It's listed in the FIDE calendar for 2014 (Dec. 17-29) but no link to an official site.
It's also listed for UAE in 2016, 2018, and 2020, but no dates specified.
