  • Does anyone know?

I was speaking with Vlad Dobrich yesterday. He mentioned that a certain G. M. Black use to donate $500 a year to the Chess Foundation. He asked me if that was Conrad Black's dad. A google search indicates that the initials match. Can anyone provide insight?

I know that Conrad Black used to play chess, and I think he was the school champion at Upper Canada College. Angela Day used to baby sit for him, so there is definitely a chess connection.

      Thanks Ian!

I received this e-mail from Jonathan Berry:

      Hey Larry:

Alex Knox told me the story of how he approached Conrad Black's dad,
asking for a donation to chess. As I understood it, his request was
for the Chess Olympics team. Alex was a policeman, and came in
uniform. Black listened to the spiel and said "I won't give you any
money, but I'll do something better. I'll write a letter so that
people I know will donate money." This may have been in the 1950s, in
which case the George Black in question might have been Conrad's
      father--or even his grandfather.

That seems to be at odds with the story about Black donating $500 a
year, which is also doubtful on the basis of, if he had done so,
there'd be more money in the Chess Foundation than there actually is.
D.A. MacAdam, who made a bit of a pest of himself for the Chess
Foundation when I was a young tournament player circa 1967, was proud
of every donation, even 50 cents!

I don't have old Chess Chats, but Hugh might. He's really good with facts.

        Hi Larry,
I don't recall saying the annual donation was to the Chess Foundation. The periodic $500 donation was to some fundraisers such as the Olympic teams event and it was from the G M Black Foundation as I recall.

          Hi Vlad,

You are correct...I simply assumed (ahh so bad) that the donation must have been made to the Foundation. Sorry
