  • No longer kryptonite

I'm glad to see that Viktor Laznicka is no longer kryptonite to my Richard Rapport. Viktor had scored plus 3 in their 4 previous encounters so I was a bit concerned when the six game match between these two was announced. It didn't strike me as altogether prudent to play six games against a somewhat lower rated opponent (but who does flirt rather frequently with elite 2700 status) who had scored 87.5% against you ):

Those concerns have now vanished after today's game number one, a 24-move crush with Black by Rapport.

With that victory, Richard overtakes my other long time fave, Alexander Morozevich, on the live ratings list. And one more win will take him past Radjabov, Ivanchuk, and Harikrishna. Two more wins and Ding, Leko, and Svidler all fall and Rapport hits top 20 status. Not bad for an 18-year-old (:

Perhaps Rapport's first move with Black, 1.d4 d6!?, warrants the '!?'. Another crush of Laznicka with that very move. Viktor refrained from 2.c4?! (again, my own '?!') today which seems to score rather poorly in all lines. Not that he fared any better. Richard is now #23 in the world (:
