  • Jerry Kobalenko

I saw the name of Jerry Kobalenko popping up in recent Alberta events. He used to live in Montreal, and was a regular at Cafe En Passant in the late 70's. He played in scholastic events when I was starting to play (late 60's), but I'm not aware of him playing in adult events at the time - his rating would have been in the 1800's.

For many years he has been involved in trips to the Arctic, and his books and photographs of the Arctic are well known.

    Re: Jerry Kobalenko

Jerry is a great guy! He lives in Canmore, AB now. About a year ago we were starting a Banff chess club and I went to help out run a small tournament. Jerry won it easily and then beat me in blitz. Since that time he started playing in some tournaments at the Calgary Chess Club as well as in a couple of other provincial events.
Previously he said that he didn't play since he was about 13 (other than online sometimes).
