    There are some interesting numbers in these piece survival stats. Five of the eight Pawns have a longer life expectancy than the Queen (:

    Well that seems hardly surprising - endings with pawns and without queens are a lot more frequent than endings with queens and without pawns.

      Yes, but that could be attributed to the fact that there are 16 pawns and only two Queens.

      Of course for pawns it's location, location, location. Kingside rook pawns are almost 3 times more likely to stay on the board than the queen pawns.

      Survival rates for knights are pretty lousy too.
