      Hi Alex:

I've drawn this to Brian's attention now. I'll be updating the list again late tonight, and he will be on it.

How about GM.Anton Kovaliev? Is he registered as well?
          :)

P.S.I'm sorry, I mispelled the name.

I don't know, I'm very uncomfortable entering a tournament where Robert Gillanders is on top of any sections rating list...but oh well, I will in any case. Just happened to get my rating above 1600 at Niagara, reverse sandbagging!!!

                Hi Caesar:

Brian Fiedler responded to Anton's earlier post, and they exchanged some e-mails. He was offered the standard free entry as a GM. He has not indicated he is coming.

                  Hi Zeljko:

The trick to avoiding Gillanders.....is to do what I did.....play up a section !

One question, the others GMs confirmed were offered just free entry too?

                          I am a chess organizer.

I try to keep my expenses as low as possible so at the end of the day I pay all my bills and there is something left over for the organization.

The professional chessplayer wants to be treated fairly.

Afterall, they have to make a reasonable living too!

                          I respect this.

The reality is that first, I want to take care of my expenses...and then I have absolutely no problem distributing the wealth.

I want to support the top players in ths country.

I think they deserve our support.

So how do we make everyone feel they are not being exploited in this?

BTW, If I was Kovalyov...a Grandmaster trying to earn his living as a chess professional...and the organizer was offering me only a free entry to the event...I would stay home. This is not a critisism of the event in Toronto or any other event in this country.

We simply have to put ourselves in their shoes and we quickly realize...that what is being offered doesn't make sense economically speaking for someone who is a professional, living off their chess income... It makes perfect sense for someone who has another revenue stream.

At the end of the day we all have to make our own choices...but please don't begrudge those who don't see the world through your eyes :)

We would like to encourage you to playing in Toronto. You are our chess Genius and we are counting on you.

Larry the problem is when we attempt to support top players in Canada which is a small chess market, we end up doing things like trying to get away with paying only $100/day at a playing facility like Tartu college - then we are surprised that we get bumped to the cafeteria because a wedding was booked for the playing hall instead & were lucky the cafeteria was available, it was darn lucky the cafeteria was even possible - not that I enjoyed playing there as much as I would the playing hall, I think the restaurant atmosphere wasn't very condusive

where is Tartu college on the Toronto chess scene? nowhere anymore and I don't blame them, if I had a hall in Toronto $100 a day wouldn't even let you get your muddy boot in the door

where is the reasonably sized tournament hall that can support tournaments large enough to grow the chess scence & maybe even in a public place so that people can know there is a chess scene in Toronto - nowhere now except this tournament & once a year for the last couple of decades or so at the Macedonian Hall in Toronto during Labour Day - when that is gone what then? - the Bayview club was okay but obviously small & limited

the Primrose is long gone, so is Tartu - if you want to support the top players its going to come down to paying appearance fees for GM's to play each other in a broom closet somewhere

I don't care about prize money but at least a reasonable expense for a reasonable place so that everyone who wants to can play & then prize money after that as you point out expenses need to be covered
