General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
What happened to Tata Steel being a top notch event... Missing are many of the 2770+ GMs like Kramnik, Nakamura, Topalov, Anand, Karjakin replaced by second-tier players like Hou, Ding, So, etc...

Imagine that! Gutter trash and scumbags like Hou and Ding??!? IT'S AN OUTRAGE!!!! Andy, I think you should write the organizers and give them a piece of your mind (careful! not too big of a piece). Let them feel the full force of your righteous rage: tell them you won't be following the tournament online (for free).

@ Andy Shaw....First of all there's Magnus Carlsen and 6 of the 13 participants are in the top 10. The average rating is 2747. Now that's not shabby either. Wesley So isn't excatly a second tier player, listed at world number 10 in the Tata roster. Incidentally, you singled out Asians as not befitting to be in this tournament.. Do have an issue because they're non Caucasian ??
The issue is likely there are no Russian players. Considering where the event is being held I can understand the players from the Netherlands but no Russians is putting politics into sports.

Russian players ? What is the big deal about the absence of Russian players ? Yeah, because of the Urkraine brouhaha ? BTW Who were the 2014 Chess Olympic champions anyways ? Russia ? Nope - its China and Ding Liren was a key player in that team. What about Hou Yifan ? Well, she is JUST the current Woman World Chess Champion the youngest at that and she happens to be a woman. Maybe that's a problem.. eh ? Wesley So who is ELO 2762 and #10 in the world , Ding Liren 2730 and Hou Yifan 2673 ( Women World Chess Champ) are not deserving but Ivan Saric 2680 is golden. I understand. Quit justifying with that Russian boycott angle. The presence of non-Caucasian players in such a prestigious event is a sore sight to some people in this blog.

Noooooooo......don't mention the Russians. Now we'll have to listen to another off-topic rant from the board's Putin apologist. :(

Yeah right... and Hou Yifan Woman World Chess Champ 2014 and Wesley So winner of 3 tournaments - Capablanca Memorial, Golden ACP Classic, Millionaire chess and tied with 6 points (4-6 place) place with Caruana and Dominguez in Tata Steel Masters 2014 are both undeserving eh? What makes you think Saric's feat is more stellar than their accomplishments ? What makes you think Badur Jovaba and Ivanchuk are more deserving than them?
Ivan Saric won Tata Steel B last year which automatically qualified him for the A group. He is well deserving of his spot.

Probably there will be more of that. If I'm recalling correctly, the Sinquefield cup also lacked a Russian player. The only thing memorable about that one is it turned out to be uncompetitive.

Let us not forget the business component of chess events. Tata Steel is an Indian corporation and China is a profilic consumer of steel. I heard that in the potential megafight between Pacquiao -Mayweather they would showcase Chinese WBO flyweight Zou Shiming in the undercard and sell PPV in China for 5 bucks and hope to generate a $1B fight which will be unprecedented in history if it happens. Just imagine 50 million out of 1 billion Chinese watching the PPV event.
On singling out Asian players based on the assumption that they won't generate viewership because they are uninteresting or what not is dimwitted and myopic and speaks of the person's ignorance of the state of chess and its global appeal in this day and age. Good that this forum is in Canada otherwise it would be branded as racist elsewhere. It does leave a sour taste in the mouth though.
