How will kids be sorted in to sections? ( like grade, age, rating)

Re: Grand Christmas Chess Tournament, Toronto - Sun. Dec. 14: Pre-Registered List:

        Hi Egis,

We will be grouping the participants first by rating this time, then match the
grade/age in the rated groups, to keep everyone happy - the newcomers will
play each other. It was not easy to do this the last few tournaments, because
of the record numbers of new entrants, so we had allowed kids there to play up.

        Thanks!
        Francis

grade/age in the rated groups, to keep everyone happy - the newcomers will
play each other. It was not easy to do this the last few tournaments, because
of the record numbers of new entrants, so we had allowed kids there to play up.

As Robert Burns said way back in his 1785 ode, 'To a Mouse', Francis, "gang aft agley". And John Steinbeck iterated those same words in the penultimate stanza of his 1937 classic, 'Of Mice and Men' (:

In your spirit of "to keep everyone happy", I have a suggestion. Why not consider, in future tournaments of this ilk, of splitting the larger grades (generally the younger grades) into two sections so that the newcomers really do get to play one another instead of starting their chess careers as provender for the stronger players?

To cite an an example my 50 strong grade 2 section yesterday, there were 18 newcomers and another 7 players rated lower than the newcomers' assumed 350 rating. I don't see why we couldn't have had 2 separate 25 member sections, beginner and intermediate/advanced, if you will. I'm almost certain the vast majority would have been that much more happy (:

                      Hi Jack,

I hope Whittier will provide adequate response to yours of Burns:
                      http://philosiblog.com/2013/03/05/fo...ght-have-been/

When the legions of the many-headed step forward to say, "hey let's
help you organize the composition of this tournament into rating and
unrating sections, etc! We've familiarized ourselves with the provisions
required, and will be happy to meet with you in the days before the
tournament, to discuss how we will help you to organize the sections..."

then maybe we can move in the direction you suggest.

If you can assure me that you can gather a handful of like-minded parents
who are ready and willing to ORGANIZE these sections, I will be happy to
elucidate you into the secrets that go behind making these populist events -
the lonely person spending vast amounts of sleepless nights building the
publicity machines, the relentless marketing, the endless talking to parents,
teachers, coordinators, principals, the lonely hours building the juggernaut....
Whoops, the time of this posting can't be right!

It's one thing to philosophize, another to organize:)

                      With every good wish,
                      Francis

I'm obviously a man in need of disabuse, Francis (:

You tell me our numbers are now too large to conduct these tournaments by rating. Fine. Point conceded. But I'm hardly 'philosophising'. Many American tournaments are already run in the manner I'm suggesting. It's a hybrid system where you simplify by keeping children in their respective grade division but then divide the grade into beginner and non-beginner sections. Children playing their first tournaments (i.e. unrated) are obviously beginners. As would be anyone rated below the rating you currently assign a beginner. In effect, the younger grades with their large numbers would have two sections. I fail to see how there's any real need for any additional 'organizing'. Moreover, you offer the best of both worlds. The beginners don't get so easily discouraged and hopefully are much more inclined to stick with chess. But I welcome your disabuse (:

At my annual scholastic event (approx 1400 players) I aim for sections of about 16-20, with about 25% of players getting a medal. There are usually 40 - 45 sections. It's not any more work to have multiple sections, and more fun for the kids.

While your math may be a tad flawed (e.g. 1400/20 = 70, a good deal more than 40-45), John, I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments. And the bottom line should always be your "more fun for the kids" (:
