Since turning 20 in June, Yu Yangyi has certainly put together a couple of spectacular tournaments. His plus 8, minus zero, equal 3, 2912 TPR, gold medal winning performance in Tromso was certainly an eye opener. And his plus 6, minus zero, equal 3, 2905 TPR in Qatar is nearly as spectacular.

Still, his most impressive pure stat to me may be his current 22 game undefeated (11 wins and 11 draws) streak with the Black pieces against the Queen's Gambit. I'm still shaking my head as to why Giri opted for a Queen's Gambit in the penultimate round (:

Interestingly enough, Yu Yangyi's 2905 TPR in Qatar exceeded his pre tournament rating by precisely 200 points. That was, however, only the 5th largest rating surplus in Qatar. Bela Khotenashvili finished with a 2716 TPR, topping her pre tournament rating of 2504 by 212 points. Tangentially, the young Georgian star also won the top female prize of $5,000 with her 5.5/9 score, 27th overall. And Bela's 212 surplus was surpassed by 3 others. WGM Zeinab Mamedjarova did Bela 1 surplus point better with a 2454 TPR vs her 2241 rating. Zeinab was the penultimate seed #153 in Qatar but finished 89th with a 50% score, 4.5/9. And the untitled Chinese player, 18-year-old Xu Yinglun, put up a 2628 TPR, exceeding his 2410 rating by 218 points. Yinglun's 5/9 was good enough for 49th place and surely a norm or two. And besting Yinglun by a single point was Russia's IM, Bogdan Belyakov, whose 2675 TPR exceeded his 2456 rating by 219 points. Belyakov finished with 5/9, good enoug for 44th place as the highest TPR in the large group at 5 points.
