World Mind Games Beijing 2014
December 11, 2014
The SportAccord World Mind Chess Games 2014 are taking place 11-17th December 2014 in Beijing, China.
The sports covered are bridge, chess, draughts, Go and xiangqi. It is rather interesting to read, “The 4th edition of the World Mind Games opens with the big one - last year’s draughts sensation at the World Mind Games, N’Cho Joel Atse of Ivory Coast taking on reigning world champion, Aleksandr Georgiev from Russia in the opening game of the draughts rapid first round”.

But let us return to our sheep – chess - one of the strongest rapid and blitz events of the year has Levon Aronian, Alexander Grischuk, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Vassily Ivanchuk, Lenier Dominguez Perez, Ruslan Ponomariov, Teimour Radjabov, Boris Gelfand, Petar Leko, Etienne Bacrot, Anish Giri, Yue Wang, Radoslaw Wojtaszek and Hao Wang.
The chess schedule:
Thursday, 11 Dec.
Rapid tournament (men and women)
Rounds 1 – 4
Friday, 12 Dec.
Rapid tournament (men and women)
Rounds 5 – 7
Saturday 13 Dec.
Blitz (men and women)
Rounds 1 – 10
Sunday 14 Dec.
Blitz (men and women)
Rounds 11 – 20
Monday 15 Dec.
Blitz (men and women)
Rounds 21 – 30
Tuesday 16 Dec.
Basque System
Men and Women (Rounds 1 – 3)
Wednesday 17 Dec.
Basque System
Men and Women (Rounds 4 – 5)
“Two players, twenty minutes and two chess boards”, is how the World Mind Games introduces the Basque system.
Blitz has got some criticism lately. To have 30 rounds in three days seems more like a Festivus feat of strength than tournament chess, but what can you do? I would dearly love for Vassily Ivanchuk to come through big time in that marathon.
In the rapids, the first four games have finished today and Vassily has tied with Bacrot, lost to Mamedyarov and Gelfand and drawn with Harikrishna.
