  • Anand interview

'The Hindu' publishes a short interview with Anand. I'm amused that Anand considers Nakamura (who celebrated his 27th birthday just 15 days ago), more Aronian's age (32) than Caruana's age (22) despite being smack dab in the middle (:

    Re: Anand interview

Anand's comment re Caruana as "the man of the year" had the qualifier "if you skip the past few months". If you don't skip the past few months, the prime contenders for that title would seemingly be:

Carlsen: despite losing 10 FIDE points he did retain his World Championship
Caruana: plus 38 FIDE points and current #2
Grischuk: plus 33 FIDE points and current #3
Giri: plus 50 FIDE points and current #7
So: plus 43 FIDE points and current #10

One other candidate may well be Yu Yangyi who gained 47 FIDE points this year, won the strongest ever Open event over both Giri and Kramnik, and led the China team to Olympic Gold.

Amusingly, with the one notable exception of Grischuk (31), Carlsen (24) is the oldest player of the remaining five and Caruana (22) the next oldest. So is 21 and both Giri and Yu are all of 20. Talk about youth being served!

Words of wisdom from Anand: turn off the engine from time to time. Think for yourself.
